Pennsylvania is most likely not the first state you consider when planning a winery tour so you may be surprised to learn that Pennsylvania is home to more than 200 wineries, and to twelve wine trails. Pennsylvania’s moderate climate and terrain provide excellent growing conditions for a host of varieties of grapes which accounts for Pennsylvania’s long and varied heritage of wine making.

Alba Wine BottlesAlba Vineyards, founded in 1980 is based on simple, sustainable agriculture. A visit to this decades old winery offers reflections on the area’s long-standing agricultural traditions, but with a new viticultural twist. The historic barn which now houses the winery and tasting room was originally constructed in 1850. Within the old stone walls, the aroma of fermenting and aging wine fills the air. A large showroom, tasting room and wine cellars tour are available. Visitors will also enjoy wonderful music and festivals on select weekends during the Spring, Summer and Fall.

With a long heritage of wine making, Sand Castle Winery was founded by brothers Joseph and Paul Maxian. The two were were born and raised in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, a region renowned for fine wine making, migrated to this country and brought the traditions of their native land with them. The vines are exclusively Vitis Vinifera, seedlings cloned from European stock. The winery began with 56,000 of these young plants painstakingly hand planted. Sand Castle relies entirely on its own harvest to produce their wine. Weekend visits will find you enjoying special events including wine & art, culinary education classes, wine and painting classes and much more.

Beneduce VineyardsBeneduce Vineyards, who borrows it’s name from it’s owners, employs a simple method to wine making:  “Do everything necessary to bring out the best in each individual batch of fruit.” This allows them to create unique award winning wines with distinct personalities that reflect both their vineyard source and the winemaker’s own style. While they offer a variety of wines intended to suit every palate, their main concentration is on aromatically intense, food friendly wines. With a spacious tasting room inclusive of indoor and outdoor seating – it’s a great spot to spend the day exploring their flavors by the glass or by the bottle. Cheese pairings are offered for a nominal fee and there are often wonderful events featuring live music and food pairings.
