There is a slight crisp nip in the air, just a hint of color on the tree covered hillside overlooking the peaceful Delaware River and my urge to harvest has been awakened. As the days continue to grow shorter, the shadows grow longer and the sunlight peeking through the trees is even more golden than on a hot summer day. A short drive lands me in the middle of one of my favorite local orchards that dot the scenic Delaware River Valley where trees now hang heavy and low with blushing fruit that has been kissed by the lingering warmth of the Autumn
I spend the morning strolling through the trees at Phillips Farm picking a sampling from a variety of apples and marveling at the beauty and tranquility that surrounds me. My mind is rushing with a wealth of ideas for my harvest – I can’t wait for that first crisp bite that sends the juices flowing down my arm like sap on a tree or to stir the pot of sauce that will be preserved for the coming winter days, not to mention the pie that will serve as dessert after Sunday dinner. Before departing I happen upon the pumpkin bin and my mind is dreaming again – of slicing into the warm pumpkin bread and snacking on roasted pumpkin seeds.
The afternoon finds me winding my way through the bucolic countryside, crossing one-lane and covered bridges while watching the yellow and red leaves dance their tango in my rear view mirror. I make my way to Solebury Orchards where I delight in the beauty of the bright colors of the Fall harvest against the lingering lush greens. As I sip on fresh apple cider and slowly savor the warmth of a freshly baked apple cider doughnut, I wonder what I treasure more . . . the scenery, the sweet smell in the air or that perfect apple that seems to jump to my hand as I reach for it.
